Two Weeks in France April 2006
|
In the spring of 2006 we left for a visit with our neighbors, the Warners who were
on sabbatical in France. Nick is a string theorist and was working at CERN. CERN is
actually in Switzerland but Nick and Lisa and the girls (Antonia and Evelyn) were
living just across the boarder in a small town in France. Their house was actually
inside the ring of the Large Hadron Collider. At that point it is about 500 feet below
the surface of the ground.
We flew from LAX to Zurich and from Zurich to Geneva where we were met by Lisa
and the girls. Katherine and the twins had been to visit in the fall of 2005 so we were
the late comers. Our plan was to head out at once to Burgundy where Lisa had
rented a house for all of us for a week. A great week there wine tasting and sight
seeing and then back to their home for another week. During this week Nick had
arranged for us to have a tour of the LCH and the instruments which were still
under construction at the time. Because they were then installing the
superconducting magnets we were unable to see the actual tunnel where the collider
ring is located. That not with standing, it was an amazing tour and we were very
fortunate to see every thing.
Now that the LCH is about to go into production it is even more important to us.
Here follows a lot of pictures of the trip...enjoy
