On December 13, 2008 Mary Ann and I set off for Death Valley NP. The wind
howled all the way but a stop for burritos and tacos and two frappuccinos
at our favorite little place in Trona, and we were ready for the crossing of
the dreaded Townes Pass (4967 feet). Across the top and the view that
greeted us was of dust and sand rising 3000 feet above the valley floor. It
was going to be a good day to stay in the Bounder and wait out the storm.
Dinner was shrimp with pasta and a very good bottle of wine. (Kohler Pinot
Noir 2002)
Sunday dawned with clear skies, bright sun and the temperature rising.
Time for a bike ride from Stovepipe Wells up to the Scotty's Castle Road turn
off and then a few miles up the very steep Mud Canyon. It has rained in the
Valley several times over the last few weeks and things are already
beginning to sprout. It should be a great year for flowers!
Sunday afternoon we headed to Furnace Creek and Sunset campground with
storm clouds building all the time. Dinner was scallops and pasta and
another great wine. (Buttonwood Cab Franc 2003)
About 1 AM the wind started to blow and in a few minutes the Bounder was
rocking even with the jacks down. Rain started later and rain mixed with
sleet was the order of the day for all of Monday. Dinner was tilapia and
pasta.
On Tuesday the 16th we moved from Sunset to Furnace Creek Campground
to await the arrival of the rest of our group.

from the left; Lisa Novick Warner, Anna Zytkow, Phil Andrews, Malcolm Perry
and next to Nick is Perry Lorenz.
It was  very cold on Wednesday night with wind blowing the real estate
around. Nick was cooking steaks with a wonderful butter sauce. It was cozy
but we all managed to fit into the Bounder and eat dinner.

Tuesday night, when every one had gathered at the
Furnace Creek Campground, Mary  Ann had a ham in
the oven, roasted red potatoes with rosemary and
broccoli.
For desert she had a fresh baked minced meat pie
made with minced meat Nick had made.
