Blue Whale Beached
at
Rincon Beach California
End of the day.  Not much left. The skull has been
removed and taken to be prepared for exhibit. Most of the
back bone had been crushed by the impact with the ship
and the skeleton was not usable for display.
Just  above us is US 101. Traffic there almost came to a stop
with people trying to see. Behind the semi you can see the other
excitement of the week. On Tuesday there was a small brush
fire on the hill side.
Crowd control became a major problem. The entire side of the
road across from the RV's is no parking and a $90.00 fine. The
Sheriff made a killing on Saturday. We had people walking
through our site all day. Met some nice people and enjoyed it for
the most part. Folks on closer to the whale were not so happy.
You can see how people just took over their sites.
A young blue whale about 70 feet long and 50 tons died at sea, hit by a passing ship it is
thought. It beached on a rocky point about a mile above where we were camped on
Wednesday. Since it was too rocky to bury it there it was towed to a point about 500 feet
from us on Saturday.  It was the cut up, examined, and buried in the sand. We did fine most
of the day until about 6 PM when the wind died and the smell drove us out.
